The Blue Star

The New York Times Book Review 100 Notable Books of 2008: "The caring, thoughtful hero of Earley’s engrossing first novel, JIM THE BOY is now 17 and confronting not only the eternal turmoil of love, but also venality and the frightening calls of duty and war."

The Christian Science Monitor Best Novels of 2008: 'This sequel to JIM THE BOY continues the story of Jim Glass, now a teenager, who is being lovingly raised by his widowed mother and a trio of uncles in Aliceville, N.C., on the eve of World War II. This novel is a rarity: a good story, simply told, without fuss or flourish."

The New York Times Book Review, Scott Turow,: “I galloped through the novel and relished every page (…) THE BLUE STAR, like its hero, is irresistible. If there is a third installment, I will be in line at the bookstore when they open up the boxes.”

The Boston Globe: “Reading Tony Earley is like riding along on a winding mountain road and wondering at how he manages to steer clear of the ruts and gaps. He avoids the insularity and easy eccentricities of Southern regionalism, the retrograde yearning for a bygone era, the predictable arc of growth of the standard coming-of-age.”

Newsweek: “Sweet but never cloying, full of feeling but not sentimental, THE BLUE STAR is both believable and enchanting.”

Somehow Form a Family: Stories That Are Mostly Ture

Booklist: "Earley draws the reader in with his deceptively simple prose and a sharp eye for the telling detail. A willingness to share painful memories, including his struggles with depression and a sometimes dysfunctional family life, makes these memoirs especially effective."

Kirkus: "Poetic, inspiring proof that you can go home again."
